General Submission Guidelines
For over half a century, Puerto del Sol has been dedicated to provide a forum for inventive and fresh prose, poetry, reviews, criticism, and artwork; and we strive to publish voices from emerging and established writers and artists. Most importantly, we pride ourselves in not following a standardized aesthetic—instead, we seek work that presents authenticity, sincerity, and respect. We recommend reading our most current issue or works from our online journal to get a sense of the content we have published recently. Thank you for your interest in our magazine, and we look forward to reading your work.
Puerto del Sol accepts submissions year round but only reads from August to April. Response times vary. Please give us at least 6-8 months to respond due to the large number of submissions we receive.
Please do not submit more than once per year. While we do accept simultaneous submissions, please notify us promptly should your work be accepted elsewhere. We do not consider previously published work.
Puerto del Sol is seeking work which engages with the theme of freak. Freaking, to freak, to be freaked. A freaky thing. Freak has a past: a rotten one. Freak as a scorn, as a label tied around necks by hierarchy, ableism, transphobia, racism. Freak as pushback. Freak getting freaked the freak up. The grotesque growing despite. Revel in it. Leather-clad tunnel vision. Maximalism. That house in the woods we all want to see. Who is brave enough to look? And let me see your browser history. What are you hiding? What is it that lives behind those walls, under the skin, in the darkest corner of the attic? Are you freaked out? Are you feeling freaky? Why are we hiding? What is out there? The freak issue: unexpected, bizarre, unfolding against perceptions. We want work that grapples with the origins, adaptations, reclamations, and mutations of freak. Give us more than surface level. Take off the mask. Or put one on. Show us the layers of freakiness, the good & the bad & the nuanced. Subvert our expectations. Freak us out. Please. We're begging.

Prose Submissions: Please submit just one story, preferably no longer than 6,000 words.
All submitted work should be previously unpublished. Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but please add a note or withdraw your submission on Submittable right away if your work is accepted elsewhere.

PROSE SUBMISSIONS are limited to one (1) self-contained work (no excerpts), including flash prose. All prose should be typed in 12-point font, Times New Roman (or any other serif typeface), and double spaced. Please indicate if your submission is fiction, nonfiction, or autofiction.
Please also include a biographical statement and cover letter with each submission.
